A · B · C · D

In short: Uzbekistan has nine main licence categories: A1 (mopeds and scooters), A (motorcycles), B (cars up to 3.5 t), C (trucks), D (buses), plus BE, CE and DE for combinations with a heavy trailer. B and C are issued from 18; D from 21 and only after experience on B or C. Most people need category B.

Students regularly ask which category they should train for. Nine times out of ten the answer is B. But sometimes someone plans to drive a Gazelle van for work, tow a boat trailer or move on to buses, and then it matters to know exactly which category is needed and how to get there. The details below follow the Law on Road Traffic (No. O'RQ-900, Article 44 on minimum ages) and Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 408 (training programmes and exams) as in force in October 2026.

Categories at a glance

Category What it covers Minimum age How to get it
A1 Mopeds and light scooters 16* No mandatory school programme; theory and practical exams
A Motorcycles, motor scooters and electric motorcycles 16 Driving school (theory self-study allowed since 2026) + exams
B Vehicles up to 3,500 kg with no more than 8 passenger seats (excluding taxis) 18 Driving school (practice mandatory) + exams
C Trucks over 3,500 kg 18 Driving school, or retraining from B/D, + exams
D Buses: more than 8 passenger seats 21 Retraining, 3 years on B or C, exams
BE, CE, DE The same vehicles with a trailer over 750 kg permitted mass — At least 12 months on the base category, retraining, practical exam

* We did not find a separate minimum age for A1 in the law; Kun.uz gives 16, the same as category A. Check before enrolling.

A note on taxis: under Article 44 of the law you may drive a taxi only from age 21, even if you have held a B licence since 18.

Trams and trolleybuses are a separate case: training starts from 21 under the same resolution, but this rarely concerns private drivers.

Category A1: mopeds and scooters

A1 was introduced on 1 January 2026. Before that, from 1 October 2025, mopeds and scooters already had to be registered and could only be ridden with an A or A1 licence.

What to know:

  • A1 covers mopeds and light scooters, including electric ones; more powerful models need category A — according to Kun.uz, the threshold is 125 cc engine capacity and 11 kW of power;
  • no mandatory driving school programme is required for A1 — you can prepare yourself and go straight to the exams;
  • the A1 theory test needs 16 correct answers out of 20 (other categories need 18);
  • if you already hold A, B, C or D, you do not need A1 separately.

For scooter couriers this is the fastest way to ride legally.

Category A: motorcycles

Training for A is shorter than for B. The minimum programme under Resolution No. 408 is 9 weeks with at least 20 hours of riding. Since 1 February 2026, theory can be self-studied as with B; practice is done through a school. The manual gearbox requirement for the practical exam does not apply to A and A1.

Category B: the one most people need

This covers cars, plus small vans and pickups with a maximum permitted mass up to 3,500 kg and no more than 8 passenger seats. In Tashkent that means the Damas, the Labo, most cars and crossovers, and vans such as the Gazelle with a permitted mass up to 3.5 t. A 12-seat minibus, however, is category D even if it looks like a people carrier.

Category B in numbers:

  • course length — at least 18 weeks under the standard programme; in practice 2.5–4 months in Tashkent;
  • at least 69 hours of practical driving;
  • practical exam in a car with a manual gearbox.

On a B licence you can tow a light trailer up to 750 kg. Anything heavier needs BE.

Schools for B are listed under category B in Tashkent.

Category C: trucks

C is needed for trucks with a permitted mass over 3.5 t: Isuzu, MAN, KamAZ and similar. There are two routes:

  1. From scratch. A C course takes at least 22 weeks and 69 hours of driving, or a combined B+C course at least 24 weeks and 72 hours. The combined option makes sense if you are certain you want to work as a driver.
  2. Retraining from B or D. A shorter programme of 7 weeks and 20 hours of driving, with theory and practical exams.

Schools that train for C are listed under category C in Tashkent.

Category D: buses

Nobody trains for D straight off the street. Under Resolution No. 408 you need:

  • to be at least 21;
  • at least three years of driving on category B or C;
  • retraining at a driving school — at least 10 weeks and 60 hours of driving;
  • theory and practical exams, with the practical taken on a training bus.

Driving on city, intercity and international routes is stricter still: five years of experience in the relevant category.

BE, CE, DE: trailer combinations

These are added on top of a base category. You need:

  • a B, C or D licence respectively;
  • at least 12 months of driving on the base category;
  • retraining at a driving school (BE and CE: at least 7 weeks and 20 hours of driving; DE: 6 weeks and 26 hours);
  • a practical exam only; theory is not repeated.

Typical BE cases are a boat trailer, a heavy construction trailer or a caravan.

Adding a category to an existing licence

If you hold B and need C, you do not have to repeat the full course: retraining and exams for the new category are enough. The process mirrors the first licence: a form 083 medical for the required category, school, exam application, exams, and a replacement card listing all your categories.

The medical panel assesses fitness for each category separately, so you can be fit for B but not for D. If you plan to drive buses, tell the doctors upfront. More on the certificate in form 083 medical certificate; the full process is in how to get a driving licence.

Which category to choose

  • Your own car, family trips — B.
  • Deliveries in a Damas or Gazelle — B, if the permitted mass is up to 3.5 t.
  • Scooter delivery — A1 (or nothing extra if you already have B).
  • Truck driving — B+C together, or C after B.
  • Buses — B or C first, then D after three years.

Find a school

If you know which category you need, leave a request for driving school matching: we will point you to schools that genuinely train for it in your area and tell you when groups start. The full list is in the driving school catalogue.

FAQ

Can I ride a moped or scooter with a category B licence?

Yes. Category A1 for mopeds and light scooters was introduced in 2026, but holders of A, B, C or D licences do not need to get it separately.

What is the minimum age for a category B licence?

18. You can start driving school a little earlier so that you can sit the exam right after your birthday, but the licence itself is only issued from 18.

Can I train for category D straight away?

No. Under Cabinet Resolution No. 408, category D requires a minimum age of 21, at least three years of driving on category B or C, and retraining at a driving school.

Do I need a separate category to tow a trailer?

A light trailer with a permitted mass up to 750 kg can be towed on a category B licence. A heavier trailer requires category BE.
