How Long Driving School Takes in Uzbekistan and Can You Speed It Up

Roadmap · 7 min · Updated: 16 October 2026

69 h

In short: under the official programme, a category B course is designed for at least 18 weeks and 69 hours of driving. In Tashkent students usually finish their driving in 2.5–4 months, and the whole route to a plastic card takes 3–5 months. You can go faster with a dense schedule, theory studied alongside driving and well-timed exam bookings, but not by cutting practice.

"I need my licence by summer" is something instructors hear every spring. Sometimes it is realistic, sometimes not. It all depends on how often you can drive each week and how carefully the exams are planned. Below are the standard, the real timelines and ways to save time. Information is as of October 2026.

What the standard says

The driver training programme is set by Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 408. Minimums for the main courses:

Course Length, at least Classroom hours Driving hours
A 9 weeks 180 20
B 18 weeks 216 69
C 22 weeks 264 69
B + C 24 weeks 288 72
Retraining for D 10 weeks 200 60
Retraining for BE 7 weeks 140 20

It also caps the workload: up to 20 hours of training per week in total, up to 4 classroom hours per day, and up to 8 hours of practical teaching per instructor per day.

Since 1 February 2026, under Cabinet Resolution No. 676, you may skip theory classes for categories A and B and study theory on your own. Practical training under the programme is still completed in full at a driving school.

How long it takes in practice

The 18-week standard covers the full course including theory. In reality, Tashkent schools usually sell a category B course as 2.5–3 months (Kun.uz cites the same minimum), and with cancellations and holidays many students finish in 3–4 months. One thing sets the pace of practice: how many times a week you drive.

Pace Lessons per week Driving hours per week Practice duration
Relaxed 2 × 1.5 h 3 about 5 months
Normal 3 × 1.5–2 h 5–6 about 3 months
Intensive 4–5 × 2 h 8–10 2–2.5 months

This assumes the programme's 69 hours. If a school provides fewer driving hours, you finish sooner but arrive at the exam less prepared, so ask before paying.

The whole route week by week: a normal case

Week What happens
0 Choose a school, 1–3 day medical, sign the contract
1–2 Closed ground: moving off, gears, steering, stopping at a line
3–8 Test-ground exercises and city driving; theory questions alongside
9–10 School's internal test, practice on the exam ground
11 Apply at cabinet.yim.uz (reviewed within 1 working day), theory and practical exams
11–12 Licence issued via my.gov.uz or a public services centre in 1–2 working days

About three months in total if you pass everything first time.

What makes it longer

  • A retake. The next attempt is no sooner than 7 days later, plus waiting for a free slot.
  • An expired theory pass. It lasts two months. Miss the practical in that time and you take theory again.
  • Breaks. Two weeks without driving set you back, and the first lessons after a pause go on recovery.
  • Switching from automatic to manual. The category B exam is on a manual; relearning takes 6–10 hours.
  • An expired form 083. If your medical certificate runs out before the exam, you must repeat the medical.

How to go faster safely

1. Drive more often, not longer. Three lessons of an hour and a half beat one four-hour session, because skills settle between lessons. To speed up, arrange 4–5 lessons a week.

2. Study theory from week one. Twenty to thirty minutes of questions a day, and you are ready for the exam by the end of practice without a separate "theory month".

3. Pick a school close by. Time saved on travel is time for an extra lesson the same evening. Schools by district are in the Tashkent driving school catalogue and under category B in Tashkent.

4. Take theory and the practical on the same day. The practical can follow straight after theory, and paying for it that day costs 1.5 million UZS instead of 1.6 million.

5. Book the exam early. Once your instructor says you are 2–3 weeks from ready, pick a date: popular slots fill up.

6. Practise the test ground before the exam. One or two sessions on a ground with exam markings are the best way to avoid losing a week to a retake. See Tashkent test grounds.

Express courses: what they really are

Some schools sell an "express" course. According to UzNews, from scratch in Tashkent it costs about 2–2.5 million UZS a month, and from 1.2 million for those with basic skills. In essence it is the same practice on a dense schedule: more lessons a week, sometimes one-to-one. If you can drive almost every day, it works. If not, express turns into a normal course at a higher price.

What express cannot do: cut mandatory practice, bypass the exam or speed up a retake. A promise of "a licence in two weeks" is a warning sign.

Realistic benchmarks

  • Flexible schedule and willing to drive 4–5 times a week: licence in 2.5–3 months.
  • Nine-to-six job, lessons mornings or evenings 3 times a week: 3–4 months.
  • Studies or work plus weekends: 4–5 months.

The detailed sequence is in how to get a driving licence, and the budget in how much a licence costs.

Find a school that fits your schedule

If timing matters, say in your driving school matching request when you need the licence and when you can drive. We will suggest schools that can genuinely give you the number of lessons per week you need.

FAQ

How long does category B training take?

The programme approved by Cabinet Resolution No. 408 is designed for at least 18 weeks. In practice, Tashkent students complete their driving in 2.5–4 months, and with exams and licence issue the whole process takes 3–5 months.

Can I get a licence in a month?

Usually not. Mandatory practice at a school is at least 69 hours of driving under the programme, plus exams and at least 7 days between attempts if you need a retake. A realistic fast track is about 2.5 months.

Does self-studying theory speed things up?

Yes, if you study the rules alongside your driving. Since 1 February 2026 theory classes for categories A and B are optional, so you are not tied to a lecture timetable.

Can I take theory and the practical on the same day?

Yes, the practical can be taken straight after theory. If you pay for it on the day you pass theory, it costs 1.5 million UZS instead of 1.6 million.
