In short: choose a driving school by three locations, not by the district on its sign: where the practical lessons take place, where the school's training ground is, and where it's easy for you to travel from on weekdays. A category B course means 40–50 trips, so an extra 40 minutes each way adds up to 50–60 lost hours. Below is a short guide to Tashkent's 12 districts, with catalogue links for each.
Why location matters more than it seems
Under the Regulation on driver training, the category B programme includes at least 69 hours of practical driving. That usually means 35–45 lessons of 1.5–2 hours plus days at the training ground. If the school is across town, every lesson comes with a long journey there and back. Students who travel far skip more lessons and drag the course out to six months. Instructors see it time and again.
Since 1 February 2026, theory for categories A and B can be self-studied or taken online, so the school's classroom matters less than it did. Three places do matter:
- Where lessons start. Where you get into the training car. Some instructors pick students up at a metro station or an agreed landmark.
- The school's training ground. The first hours and exam preparation take place there, and it may not be in the same district as the office.
- Training routes. Under the Traffic Rules, city lessons may only use routes agreed with the traffic police. They usually run near the training ground or the office. If they're in your district, you'll also learn the streets you'll drive later on your own.
Tashkent's districts at a glance
These are general descriptions from an instructor's point of view. Schools, prices and addresses change, so check them on each district page in the catalogue.
| District | What it's like for learners | Catalogue |
|---|---|---|
| Chilanzar (Chilonzor) | Large residential district in the south-west. Many schools and price competition. Inner estate roads suit first lessons | Chilonzor |
| Uchtepa | Next to Chilanzar, with calmer traffic. Residents can compare schools in both districts | Uchtepa |
| Yunusabad (Yunusobod) | North of the city, wide streets and a clear block layout. Plenty of schools to choose from | Yunusobod |
| Mirzo Ulugbek | North-east, large residential estates and busy wide avenues. Many schools and good schedule choice | Mirzo Ulugbek |
| Yashnabad (Yashnobod) | South-east, a mix of housing estates and industrial zones. Wide roads for practising lane changes | Yashnobod |
| Sergeli | South, many new housing estates and wide streets. A fair number of schools, handy for the southern outskirts | Sergeli |
| Yangihayot | The city's newest district, mostly new housing. Fewer schools so far; residents often study in Sergeli or Chilanzar | Yangihayot |
| Bektemir | The smallest district, in the south-east. Few schools, so look at neighbouring Yashnabad and Sergeli too | Bektemir |
| Mirabad (Mirobod) | Central, heavy traffic and little parking. A good choice if the school is near your work | Mirobod |
| Yakkasaray (Yakkasaroy) | Central, dense buildings and busy streets. Tight for first lessons, useful for city practice | Yakkasaroy |
| Shaykhantakhur (Shayxontohur) | The old city and Chorsu: narrow mahalla streets, markets, pedestrians. A tough but honest test of city driving | Shayxontohur |
| Almazar (Olmazor) | North-west, the university campus area and housing estates. Convenient for students and nearby districts | Olmazor |
According to our data as of October 2026, Chilanzar, Yunusabad and Mirzo Ulugbek have the most driving schools and Bektemir the fewest. The full city list is in the Tashkent driving school catalogue.
How much time travel takes
A simple calculation for 40 trips over a course:
| Travel time one way | Total travel time over the course |
|---|---|
| 15 minutes | about 20 hours |
| 30 minutes | about 40 hours |
| 60 minutes | about 80 hours |
The difference between a school near home and one across town is more than all the driving hours in the programme. So when choosing, first mark three points on a map: home, work and the school's training ground. Only then compare prices.
Choosing by home, work or study
If you work in the centre. A school near your office with lessons at lunchtime or straight after work is easiest. Central streets are busy, so the first hours will be at the training ground anyway.
If you're a student. Look at schools near your university, for example around the campus area in Almazar, and ask about evening groups and flexible schedules. There's a separate article on choosing lesson times.
If you're at home with children. Look for a school within walking distance and morning lessons. If a female instructor matters to you, use the driving schools for women filter.
If you live on the outskirts. Bektemir and Yangihayot have less choice. Pick the neighbouring district in the direction of your work, not the cheapest school on the far side of the city.
What to ask a school about location
- Where is the training ground, and how do you get there without a car?
- Where do driving lessons start: the office, the training ground or a metro station?
- Which streets do the training routes use?
- Where is the exam held, and how far is it from your home? As of October 2026, Tashkent's exam centre is in Yangihayot district. Addresses are in the Tashkent driving grounds and exam centres section.
- Does the school have a branch in your district, and is it covered by the same licence? How to check a licence is explained in how to avoid an unlicensed driving school.
A common question: prices by district
Prices do vary between districts, but less than they vary between schools in the same district. Compare what's included, not just the price tag: driving hours, fuel, the training ground, the internal exam. Saving 300,000–500,000 soum at a school across town and spending 50 hours travelling is a bad deal. For a full cost breakdown, see how much a driving licence costs.
Find a school nearby
If you'd rather not compare schools yourself, leave a request through the school matching form. Tell us your home or work district, gearbox preference and convenient times. An operator will suggest nearby schools, and the choice stays with you.
FAQ
Do I have to learn at a driving school in my own district?
No. Your registered address and district don't restrict your choice. But practical training is at least 69 hours, so a school near home or work saves dozens of hours of travel.
Which Tashkent district has the most driving schools?
In our catalogue, Chilanzar, Yunusabad and Mirzo Ulugbek have the most schools, and Bektemir noticeably fewer. Check the district pages in the catalogue for current lists.
Does it matter where the school's training ground is?
Yes. Your first lessons and exam preparation happen at the training ground, which may be in a different district from the school's office. Ask for the address before you pay.
Can I study theory in one district and drive in another?
Since 2026, category B theory can be self-studied or taken online. In that case, only the practical locations matter: the training ground and the place where your instructor starts each lesson.
