How to Pass the Driving Theory Test First Time: A 3-Week Plan

3 × 7

In short: the theory test has 20 questions, 25 minutes and allows at most two mistakes (as of October 2026). Three weeks at 60–90 minutes a day is enough if you spend week one on rules and signs, week two on difficult topics using a mistake log, and week three on full timed papers. Book the exam once ten practice papers in a row come back with one mistake or none.

What to know about the test before you start

The format is covered in detail in our article on the theory exam. For planning, four things matter:

Parameter As of October 2026
Questions per paper 20, some with animation
Time 25 minutes, roughly 75 seconds per question
Pass mark 18 correct out of 20
Validity of a pass 2 months, within which you must pass the practical exam

Questions are drawn at random by the system each time. You cannot learn "your" paper, and answers memorised without understanding fall apart the moment a picture looks slightly different.

The last row has a practical consequence: do not take the theory test too early. If your driving lessons have only just started, two months may not be enough to get ready for the practical exam.

Before you begin: one evening of setup

  • Download the current traffic rules in the language you will take the test in. The exam is available in Uzbek or Russian, so choose the one you think in.
  • Find a practice app or website that explains the answers rather than just marking them right or wrong.
  • Start a mistake log, either a notebook or a note on your phone. It is the most important tool in the whole plan.
  • Fix a daily slot: 60–90 minutes every day beats five hours on a Sunday.

Week 1. Rules and signs

The aim this week is to understand how the rules fit together, not to churn through as many tests as possible.

Day What to do
1 General provisions, duties of drivers and pedestrians, definitions. Definitions matter a lot: "give way", "stopping", "parking", "built-up area"
2 Warning signs and priority signs
3 Prohibitory and mandatory signs
4 Special regulation, information and service signs, supplementary plates, road markings
5 Traffic lights and traffic controller signals
6 Moving off, road position, speed
7 Topic tests for the week and your first mistake log entries

After each section, answer 15–20 questions on that section only. When you get one wrong, find the rule that explains the correct answer and write it down in your own words.

Week 2. Difficult topics and the mistake log

The aim is to close the gaps where most people slip. In instructors' experience these are junctions, overtaking, stopping and parking, and traffic controller signals. We cover them separately in the hardest topics in the theory test.

Day What to do
8 Junctions: controlled, uncontrolled, roads of equal status
9 Overtaking, passing oncoming traffic, lane changes
10 Stopping and parking: where it is banned, required distances
11 Level crossings, pedestrian crossings, public transport stops
12 Towing, carrying passengers and loads, lights
13 First aid, vehicle condition, driver liability
14 Redo every question in your mistake log

Keep the log simple: the question in brief, your wrong answer, the right answer, the rule in one line. After a week, two or three topics where mistakes repeat will stand out. Those are your real weak spots.

To make the rules stick beyond exam day, use the methods in how to learn the traffic rules effectively.

Week 3. Timed papers

Now every day means full papers under exam conditions.

  • Days 15–18. Two or three full papers a day, each with a 25-minute timer. Phone in another room, no help. After each paper, go through your mistakes against the rules.
  • Days 19–20. Five or six papers in a row with five-minute breaks. This builds stamina: many people slip not from lack of knowledge but from fatigue by question 15.
  • Day 21. An easy day: reread the mistake log, do one or two papers, get to bed on time.

The readiness benchmark

A benchmark many instructors use: ten full papers in a row scoring 19 or 20 out of 20, finishing with at least five minutes to spare. Nerves on the day usually cost about one mistake, and that margin covers it. If you are still well short of this, it is better to move the date than to pay for another attempt.

Tactics in the exam room

  1. Read the whole question. Words like "allowed", "prohibited", "must" and "in which case" change the answer.
  2. Look at the picture from "your" car. First identify which vehicle is yours, then work out the others.
  3. Watch the animation to the end. In video questions, the key detail often appears in the last few seconds.
  4. Do not get stuck. If a question takes more than a minute, skip it and come back: the system lets you answer in any order.
  5. Do not change answers without a reason. Your first answer after clear reasoning is usually right. Change it only if you can point to a specific rule.
  6. Watch the clock. By minute 12 you should be around question 10.

Exam day checklist

  • Passport or ID card with you.
  • Arrive 20–30 minutes before your slot.
  • Phone switched off and put away: being caught with one stops the test with no refund.
  • Eat breakfast. Concentration drops by mid-test on an empty stomach.
  • Before starting, check your details and category on the screen.

If it does not work out

Failing the theory test once is annoying, not a disaster. Note on screen which questions you got wrong, write the topics down as soon as you leave, and spend a week on those alone. Retake rules and fees change from time to time, so confirm them with your exam centre before rebooking.

Studying with a driving school

Self-study does not suit everyone. If you prefer a teacher and a fixed timetable, choose a school from the Tashkent driving schools catalogue or browse category B courses. If you would like us to match a school to your district and schedule, leave a request on our matching form.

FAQ

How many mistakes are allowed on the theory test?

As of October 2026 the test has 20 questions and a 25-minute time limit, and you need at least 18 correct answers. In other words, no more than two mistakes.

Are three weeks enough if I did not attend theory classes at a driving school?

Usually yes, if you study 60–90 minutes every day and learn the rules rather than memorising answers. Since 1 February 2026, theory for categories A and B may be studied independently.

How do I know I am ready?

A good benchmark is ten full practice papers in a row scoring at least 19 out of 20, with time to spare. If mistakes keep appearing in one topic, go back to it.

How long is a passed theory test valid?

Two months. You need to pass the practical exam within that period or retake the theory. So it makes sense to prepare for theory while your driving lessons are already under way.
